The legend says that the untimely death of Mumtaz Mahal after giving birth to 11 children made Emperor Shah Jahan deeply mournful. He became very sad as it was very difficult for him to come to terms with the reality that he has to live his life without his life partner, the beautiful queen. He decided to make his love eternal through a timeless mausoleum.

The construction work on Taj Mahal started in the year 1631 and it continued for 22 years. The blood and sweat of 20,000 labourers and workers went in to give the mausoleum the look and shape it has today. The bodies of the Queen and her King are placed side by side inside an inner chamber of the monument.
